Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A recent acronym came to light a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to attend to a minor who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.
The contest, notably excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on peace has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
