Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
