Two Victims Named in Brown University Incident as Authorities Persist in Hunt for Killer.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the recent mass shooting in Providence were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was vice-president of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow on social media, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

Nine more persons were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said late Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“There is a killer at large,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our public”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official reported to the media outlet.

Law enforcement that raided the inn found a pair of pistols and magazines when the individual was detained, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was discharged from care, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, friends, and peers and grieve for of his promising future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to statistics.
